Geography
Balchik is situated in the North East part of Bulgaria. It is really close to the resort “Albena” and town of Kavarna. In the area of the town there are problems with number of landslides. Average seawater temperature is 2-3 degrees lower than that in the South Black Sea

History
The ancient Thracians are the first inhabitants of the region and place where now is Balchik. Archeologists have found great number of artifacts dated 2000 years ago (glasses, metal works, finery, weapons). In the middle ages there was a castle called Cronuj, which had to defend the town from sea attacks.

Religion
In the middle of the town is situated Bulgarian Orthodox Medieval Church. Almost all the icons are preserved in good conditions. In the vicinity of the Botanical Garden is the mosque built by the Romanian queen Maria (in the yard of her summer residence). The name of the town originates from the Kuman word : balikchik (means small town) – prof. Ivan Dobrev

Cultural, natural and historical sights
Balchik botanical garden is one of the hundred most important Bulgarian National Tourist Sights. There visitors can see unique plants, collected from all around the world. Next to the Garden is the Castle of the Romanian Queen (It was the residence for a while of the Romanian queen in the beginning of the XX century). Both Botanical Garden and the Palace are the most attractive sights in Balchik. On 27 May 2005 Botanical Garden celebrates its 50 anniversary. There is a new walk line for blind persons. You can find variety of exotic fruits growing in the hothouses of the Botanical Garden.(lemons, bananas, papayas, etc.)

Museums
The Historical Museum offers interesting finds, dated from several centuries ago and a lot of archeological excavations. In Balchik there are: Ethnographic and Bulgarian National Revival complexes, Art gallery, a monastery school, three churches and a mosque, which are also attractive for the tourists. The Balchik art gallery has more than 40 years of history and has been founded by Klara Petkova. Here tourists can see several masterpieces of Vladimir Dimitrov- The Master. Paintings of Salvador Dali were exhibited in the past also.
